GASKETED PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER

Efficient, Serviceable and Flexible Heat Transfer

Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers, also known as GPHE or PHE units, are widely used when high heat transfer efficiency, compact design, easy maintenance, and hygienic operation are required.

Gasketed Plate Heat Exchanger Overview

A gasketed plate heat exchanger consists of a series of corrugated stainless steel plates compressed inside a frame. The gaskets seal the flow channels and direct hot and cold fluids through alternating passages. The corrugation pattern creates turbulence, improves heat transfer, and allows compact thermal performance compared with many traditional heat exchanger designs.

Why Choose GPHE?

GPHE systems can be opened for inspection, manual cleaning, gasket replacement, plate cleaning, or capacity modification. This makes them highly suitable for processes where fouling, hygiene, maintenance access, and future expansion are important.

Engineering Advantage: Unlike welded or brazed designs, gasketed plate heat exchangers offer modularity. Plates can be added, removed, inspected, cleaned, or replaced according to process requirements.

Fanpod PHE Frame Manufacturing and Plate Integration

Fanpod manufactures the frame structure for gasketed plate heat exchangers and integrates suitable plate packs based on the required thermal duty, pressure, temperature, product characteristics, cleanability, and maintenance needs.

Depending on project requirements and availability, Fanpod can work with compatible plates from internationally recognized plate heat exchanger brands such as Alfa Laval, GEA, and other reputable manufacturers. This allows our team to provide reliable PHE solutions while focusing on accurate mechanical frame design, proper plate compression, serviceability, hygienic layout, and process integration.

Common plate references that may be considered depending on duty and compatibility include GEA VT5, VT10, VT20, VT40, VT80, NTL150 and Alfa Laval M10, M15 and similar plate families. Final selection is always based on thermal calculation, channel arrangement, gasket compatibility, pressure rating, and process conditions.

Brand names such as Alfa Laval and GEA are used for technical identification of compatible plate types and references. Final configuration depends on the project specification, plate availability, gasket material, and required operating conditions.
FEATURES & BENEFITS

Key Advantages of Fanpod GPHE Solutions

A properly engineered GPHE is not only a heat exchanger. It is a maintainable thermal system designed for process reliability, hygienic performance, and long-term service.

1

High Thermal Efficiency

Corrugated plates create turbulent flow and high heat transfer coefficients, allowing efficient heating, cooling, pasteurization, regeneration, and utility heat recovery.

2

Easy Maintenance

The plate pack can be opened for inspection, cleaning, gasket replacement, or plate modification. This is especially valuable in food, dairy, beverage, and fouling processes.

3

Flexible Capacity

The number of plates, flow arrangement, and channel configuration can be adjusted according to capacity, temperature program, pressure drop, and process expansion needs.

Applications of Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers

GPHE units are used in both hygienic and industrial thermal systems. Their compact footprint, strong heat transfer performance, and cleanable construction make them suitable for a wide range of processes.

  • Milk, juice, beverage, and liquid food pasteurizers
  • Dairy processing lines, yogurt milk heating, cream heating, and regeneration sections
  • Hot water loops, chilled water circuits, and process utility systems
  • CIP heating circuits and hygienic cleaning systems
  • Pharmaceutical and cosmetic liquid processing
  • Food and beverage heating, cooling, and heat recovery
  • Chemical, industrial, and process cooling/heating duties
  • Energy recovery between hot and cold process streams

MATERIALS & CONFIGURATION

Plates, Gaskets, Frame and Connections

Material selection must match the fluid, temperature, cleaning chemicals, pressure rating, and hygiene requirements of the process.

Plates Stainless steel AISI 304 / 316 / 316L or other alloys depending on product compatibility.
Gaskets EPDM, NBR, FKM or other gasket materials selected according to temperature and fluid type.
Frame Fanpod-manufactured carbon steel or stainless steel frame based on duty and environment.
Connections Sanitary clamp, DIN, SMS, flange, threaded or custom connections according to the project.
TECHNICAL COMPARISON

Comparison with Other Heat Exchanger Types

Each heat exchanger type has advantages. The correct choice depends on thermal duty, pressure, cleanability, fouling tendency, footprint, and maintenance strategy.

Feature Gasketed Plate Heat Exchanger Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger
Maintenance Easy access; plates removable for inspection and service. Compact but not normally serviceable internally. Serviceable, but often requires more space and time.
Cleaning CIP compatible and can be opened for manual cleaning. Internal mechanical cleaning is limited. Can be cleaned, but access and method depend on design.
Footprint Compact to medium footprint with high efficiency. Very compact. Usually larger footprint.
Thermal Efficiency High due to turbulent plate channels. Very high in compact duties. Medium to high depending on design.
Capacity Flexibility Plates can often be added or removed. Fixed capacity after manufacturing. Modification is more difficult.
Best Use Food, dairy, beverage, pharma, utilities, and cleanable process duties. HVAC, compact utility duties, and sealed systems. High-pressure, high-temperature, viscous, or special industrial services.

Important Design Factors

Correct GPHE design requires more than selecting a plate size. Thermal performance, pressure drop, flow velocity, fouling margin, gasket compatibility, hygienic access, and serviceability must be evaluated together.

  • Required inlet and outlet temperatures for both hot and cold streams
  • Flow rates, product density, viscosity, and specific heat capacity
  • Allowed pressure drop on product and service sides
  • Fouling tendency and cleaning frequency
  • Plate material and gasket material compatibility
  • Frame pressure rating and mechanical compression range
  • CIP/SIP requirements and hygienic piping arrangement
  • Future expansion or additional plate capacity
