Steam Purity Grades

As an engineer and consultant, being able to distinguish these grades is exactly how you justify the cost of higher-end equipment to a client. We don't treat "steam as steam" — we know the difference.

The 4 Levels of Steam Purity

Technical categorization of steam purity levels, ordered from lowest to highest purity, including specific Micron Ratings and Generation Methods you need for your responsible plant.

Process Steam

"Plant Steam"

Standard carbon steel boiler. Contains rust, pipe scale, and boiler additives.

Filter: N/A (100+ µm)

Culinary Steam

"3-A Steam"

Process steam through Culinary Filter. Meets 3-A Standard 609-03.

Filter: 5 Micron

Clean Steam

"Chemical-Free"

Dedicated SS generator using RO/DI water. No additives allowed.

Filter: 1-5 Micron

"WFI Steam"

From WFI water. Condensate meets USP WFI specs. Pyrogen-free.

Filter: 0.1-0.2 Micron

Detailed Breakdown: Where to Use What

Process Steam Boiler

Process Steam (The Utility)

Grade 1 — Indirect Heating Only

The Source: Standard boiler room with carbon steel infrastructure.

The Problem: It is "dirty." Carries boiler chemicals (amines, hydrazines) which are toxic in high concentrations. Contains rust from carbon steel pipes.

Application: Only use for Indirect Heating where steam never touches the product or product-contact surfaces.

  • Shell & Tube heat exchangers (monitored leaks)
  • Jacketed tanks (non-product contact)
  • General facility heating systems
Culinary Steam Filter

Culinary Steam

Grade 2 — Food & Beverage Grade

The Source: Process steam passed through a Culinary Filter Assembly meeting 3-A Sanitary Standards (609-03).

Micron Rating: Must remove 95% of particles 2 microns or larger. We typically supply 1-micron or 5-micron sintered stainless steel cartridges.

  • Direct Steam Injection (DSI) for sauces, cheese, UHT milk
  • SIP for sterilizing fillers, pipes, tanks
  • Tank Vent Filter sterilization
Clean Steam Generator

Clean Steam

Grade 3 — The Middle Ground

The Source: Dedicated "Clean Steam Generator" (CSG). Uses plant steam only as heat source to boil clean RO/DI water.

Micron Rating: Usually filtered at 1 micron at point of use to catch gasket degradation, though steam itself is chemically pure.

  • Humidification in Clean Rooms (Electronic/Pharma)
  • Food products where no boiler additives allowed
  • High-purity utilities without WFI requirements
Pure Steam Pharmaceutical

Pure / Sterile Steam

Grade 4 — Pharmaceutical Standard

The Source: Specialized "Pure Steam Generator" (PSG) or Multi-Effect Still using WFI quality water.

The Definition: Condensate must meet WFI standards (Conductivity < 1.3 µS/cm, Endotoxins < 0.25 EU/ml).

  • Autoclaves for surgical instruments
  • Lyophilizers (freeze dryers) in pharma
  • WFI Loop Sterilization
  • 0.2 micron sterilizing grade filtration

"Pure" vs "Sterile" Steam

Understanding the critical difference for pharmaceutical applications.

💎 Pure Steam

Refers to the Chemical Composition — chemically pure water (H₂O), no minerals, no pyrogens. Generated from WFI water with condensate meeting USP specifications.

🛡️ Sterile Steam

Refers to the Biological State — contains no living organisms. "Sterile Steam Filter" means 0.2 micron to prevent re-contamination of Pure Steam lines.

FANPOD Note: When clients ask for "Sterile Steam Filter," they usually mean a filter rated at 0.2 micron (Sterilizing Grade) intended to prevent re-contamination of a Pure Steam line in critical aseptic zones.
